I’m the child
with stars in her eyes
and earth in her bones
always learning, growing
rooting and reaching

I’m the mother
maybe not always
of any human form
but I am definitely a mother

a mother of remembering
what has been forgotten
a mother of love letters and poems
a mother to the trees
the plants and the animals

I even try to be the mother
of the Great Mother sometimes
in very small ways
it’s an honor to take care of something
that’s so much bigger than me

I’m the child and the mother
the student and the teacher
a lover of life
